EMC, NetApp Go Open Source With Hadoop

imageEMC (NYSE:EMC) and NetApp this week unveiled plans to support the Apache Hadoop project as a way to develop scalable clusters of nodes on which large data files can be stored in segments for improved performance and scalability.

EMC plans to provide full open-source support for Hadoop with the eventual release of software, appliance, and eventually virtual appliance versions of the Hadoop technology in connection with technology it got with last year’s Greenplum acquisition.

EMC has huge appetite for Big Data technology

imageEMC Corp.’s 2012 acquisition strategy revolves more around Big Data technology than mainstream data storage. The vendor is chasing data analytics, security and the management that ties the pieces together, according to EMC president Pat Gelsinger.

Speaking at an EMC Forum in Foxborough, Mass., last week, Gelsinger said EMC would continue to be an active acquirer. He identified the data analytics market as the biggest focus of the company’s spending.
